A centrosome consists of two centrioles surrounded by pericentriolar material. It is a unique structure that retains its basic features in organisms of different taxonomic groups, from single-celled algae to mammals. In addition to the most notable function of organizing the microtubule system in mitosis and interphase, the centrosome performs many other cellular functions. In particular, centrioles are the basis for the formation of sensitive primary cilia and motile cilia. Another major function of centrosomes is to concentrate regulatory proteins in one place, which are responsible for cell progression during the cell cycle. Despite the exceptions, the functioning of the centrosome is subject to general principles, and the function of the centrioles included in it has not been fully investigated.
