Abstract

The paper discusses a chalcedony scarabeoid (inventory number 431) from the “Iranian Collection” of the Glyptic Fund of the S. Janashia State Museum, on the face of which a bull with a bowed head is depicted in profile. A new glyptic artifact was introduced to scientific distribution since it had not been previously studied. Taking into account the comparable glyptic material, we considered the scarabeoid to be a glyptic monument of the Eastern Greek circle and dated it to the end of the 5th century BC. At the same time, in the paper, we discussed two silver shield rings found in tomb No. 24 in Vani, Western Georgia, of a slightly later period (although belonging to the same cultural epoch), with images of a bull on the rings. One of them, like the scarabeoid from the “Iranian Collection,” we considered to be an Eastern Greek glyptic artifact, and the other, which depicts a bull's head, we attributed to the Colchian‒local glyptic school. We dated both Vani shield rings to the 4th century BC.
