This study examines how the newspaper „Tsnobis Purtseli” represented socio-political events and processes in 1904 after becoming the official organ of the Social-Federalist Party and how it articulated its ideological vision. „Tsnobis Purtseli” actively engaged with the key developments of the era, including the Russo-Japanese War, as well as prevailing social, political, economic, cultural, and educational issues. By regularly publishing journalistic materials on social inequality and other pressing matters, the newspaper functioned not merely as an information outlet, but as a vital historical source reflecting contemporary socio-cultural dynamics.
The research examines materials published between January 1 and October 31, 1904. It analyzes key thematic trends relevant to Georgian public life alongside major international events, notably the Russo-Japanese War, which altered the international geopolitical landscape and the balance of power in East Asia. The thematic emphasis of the 1904 publications is evaluated within its historical context. Despite existing literature, „Tsnobis Purtseli” remains insufficiently studied from a media and journalistic perspective, which underscores the necessity and relevance of this research.
Special attention is given to the journalistic output of the publication's leading contributors. By analyzing the thematic characteristics, content features, modes of argumentation, and stances toward various issues in their writings, the study highlights both the distinct stylistic signatures of individual authors (such as Philippe Gogichaishvili, Samson Pirtskhalava, Ivane Javakhishvili, and others) and the overarching editorial and ideational direction of the newspaper. Examining these materials provides insight into how specific topics aligned with the paper's broader socio-political position.
The study relies on archival research and content analysis. Based on the 1904 issues, a systematic analysis of the newspaper's thematic, genre, and ideological characteristics was conducted. The archival materials are examined and systematized, analyzing the thematic, content-related, and genre-specific features of individual publications. To achieve a comprehensive analysis of the subject, an interdisciplinary approach and contextual knowledge are applied; the material is also examined through a historiographical lens.
The findings demonstrate that, alongside its informational function, „Tsnobis Purtseli” played a major role in shaping public opinion. A central objective of the editorial team was to participate in the intellectual and civic development of society by setting the public agenda around pressing issues and promoting values and ideas essential to national progress. Consequently, „Tsnobis Purtseli” stands as a prominent publication of the early 20th-century Georgian press and an essential historical source for understanding the political, social, and cultural realities of the era.
