Synonymy in Maritime Terminology

One of the significant features of terminology is related to the increase in terminological synonymy. Synonymy in maritime terminology is a linguistic phenomenon in which two or more terms denote the same maritime concept, or are so close in meaning that they can be used interchangeably in professional practice. Since English is recognized as the international maritime language, and its proficiency, along with professional competence, is an essential requirement for every seafarer, this study is based on a descriptive method and includes analytical observation of linguistic material as well as semantic analysis. The discussion of synonymy is presented through examples that are used by Georgian seafarers in both the Georgian and English languages.
