Abstract

The subject of our work is the origin of phraseological units in the French language. This topic is highly relevant due to the constant evolution of the French language. Understanding the meaning of a particular phraseological unit and the ability to use it in speech is necessary for correct speech communication with native speakers. Greek and Latin phraseological loanwords are the most frequently used; however, there are also borrowed phraseological units from English, Italian, and other languages, which are not widespread and relatively scarce.

Properly French phraseology. A number of phraseological units originate from the material, cultural, social or economic spheres of human life. These spheres reflect its history, existence, culture, spirit, way of thinking, and so forth.

Non-terminological origin of phraseological units. This group includes phraseological units that are associated with historical facts or events, folk superstitions, customs and traditions of the French people, as well as those units derived from historical phrases, quotations and anecdotes.

Terminological phraseological units. The origin of terminological phraseological units is attributed to those phraseological units that arose on the basis of a range of professions, such as sports, hunting, various games, and so forth.
