Abstract
Passiflora caerulea L. is widely distributed in the subtropical regions of North and South America and is cultivated as an ornamental plant in the Crimea and along the Black Sea coast.
The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical composition of the aerial parts of blue passionflower (Passiflora caerulea L.) cultivated in Georgia and to evaluate its potential biological activity.
LC–MS/MS analysis of methanolic extracts obtained from the aerial parts of Passiflora caerulea at different phenological stages (budding, full flowering, and fruit ripening) identified flavonoid compounds predominantly belonging to apigenin and luteolin O- and C-glycosides. Rutin (quercetin-3-O-rutinoside) was detected only in extracts from plants at the fruit-ripening stage.
Total phenolic content varied by developmental stage and was 5.41, 6.04, and 7.71 mg GAE/g at the budding, full flowering, and fruit-ripening stages, respectively.
All methanolic extracts demonstrated free radical scavenging activity, with the extract obtained during the fruit-ripening phase exhibiting the highest antioxidant capacity (IC50 = 7.45 mg/mL).
