1967 წლიდან, ღვიძლის გადანერგვა ითვლება სტანდარტულ ქირურგიულ ჩარევად ავადმყოფებში, რომლებსაც ღვიძლის დაავადებების, ტერმინალური სტადია აღენიშნებათ, ღვიძლის ორთოტოპედიულ ტრანსპლანტაციას ახასიათებს რიგი გართულებებისა. რომლებიც ფატალურად შეიძლება დასრულდეს ავადმყოფისთვის. ერთ-ერთი ასეთ მნიშვნელოვან ღვიძლის პოსტ-ტრანსპლანტაციურ გართულებას წარმოადგენენ ბილიარული გართულებები - ე.წ. ღვიძლის ტრანსპლანტაციის „აქილევსის მყესი“. სტატიაში განხილულია ბილიარული გართულებების მკურნალობის, დიაგნოსტიკისა და პროფილაქტიკის აქტუალური საკითხები, რაც საშუალებას მოგვცემს უფრო დროულად და სწრაფად და ეფექტურად ვუმკურნალოთ ამ ვერაგი გართულების მქონე პაციენტებს.
