Georgian and English Compliments in social networks

With the increased use of social media, complimenting behavior online has become a widespread social activity in response to the posting of photos and other actions. As such, in recent years, it has increasingly attracted the attention of researchers in pragmatics. This article provides an overview of compliments and responses to compliments on social media. The empirical data consists of verbal and non-verbal compliments made in social networks in English and Georgian. Compliments are also analyzed from the viewpoints of politeness theory, speech act theory, and the concept of “face”. Additionally, certain cultural and gender differences have been identified in the compliments made in social networks.
