“Oghond Martla”: A Marker of Reinforced Sincerity and Semantic Inconsistency

The article examines the construction “oghond martla” (“really, honestly”) as a characteristic feature of contemporary Georgian spoken discourse. This expression is widely used in various communicative situations, particularly in evaluative utterances and compliments. The aim of the study is to analyze its functional and semantic properties and to identify the reasons for its increased frequency in modern Georgian speech.

The research is based on syntactic-semantic and pragmatic analysis, as well as discourse-oriented observation of spoken language data. The paper discusses the historical development of the conjunction “oghond” in Georgian, outlining its affirmative, adversative, and conditional-concessive functions. It is argued that in the construction “oghond martla” the conjunction appears to regain its original affirmative meaning; however, it simultaneously retains adversative features at the syntactic and functional levels, which leads to semantic inconsistency.

The analysis demonstrates that “oghond martla” functions in contemporary Georgian as a means of reinforcing sincerity, reflecting pragmatic communicative needs shaped by social distrust and increased skepticism toward verbal evaluation.
