Semantics and productivity of the -phob suffixoid in modern German (in relation to the Gerogian language)

This study examines the semantics and productivity of the -phob suffixoid in modern German and its equivalents in the Georgian language. The research traces the etymological evolution of the element from its Greek origins, where it shifted in meaning from "flight" to "fear". In the German context, the element became highly productive within medical and psychological fields during the 19th century before expanding into everyday language. The author analyzes how these terms are integrated into Georgian, noting that they entered the language primarily through Western European scientific channels at the turn of the 20th century. A significant focus is placed on the "terminological dualism" in Georgian, where international loanwords through transliteration coexist with descriptive native translations. Finally, the paper classifies various semantic groups—such as fears related to processes, objects, or geographical locations—to demonstrate how context determines the translation method used in Georgian.
