Abstract

Te article deals with synonymy-one of the most problematic phenomenon in Linguistics. Synonyms, in general, have been noted as one of the several factors that can make words more difficult to learn. However, learning vocabulary with synonyms will be easier than learning words without knowing them. People should be cautious of considering the differences between all choices and finding the right words to use in each particular situation. The correct use of synonyms in the writing process can add colour and accuracy to the text.Considering the synonymy relationship led us discuss that the words that are called near synonymy words which are similar in meaning but tend not be contrastive and are distributed differently. The article offers us Georgian and English examples of synonymy where determining the absolute synonymous pair is based on the ability of the pair to be interchangeable in all contents in a way to test the substitution in the sentence. Synonyms in both languages are found differing with shades of meaning, connotations, affective value, style, valency and idiomatic use.
