The Specifics of Reflection of Cultural Layers of a Literary text in Translation

Abstract

The given paper aims at the analysis of the specifics of reflection of cultural layers of a literary text in the tr5anslation performed by professional translators of fiction literature and BA students of the Chairs of German and Russian Languages of the Faculty of Humanities of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. The analysis is carried out based on the example of a short story by a German writer Wolfgang Borchert  - “The Sad Geraniums” (Die traurigen Geranien).

The research objectives are as follows:

1. a) Contrastive analysis of professional translations of the short story from German into the Russian language;
2. b) Description of the experiment of translation of the short story from German into Russian by BA students; the aim of the experiment and its outcomes;
3. c) Analysis of the translations made by students from the perspective of their perception of two non-intersecting parallel lines of the structure of “The Sad Geraniums”.
