The Importance of Formative Assessment and the Actual Status of Its Use in Public Schools

Abstract

Participation in various educational projects allows for the observation and evaluation of the teaching process of hundreds of teachers. The paper presents the results of the observation in terms of the extent to which, purposefully and balancedly, the components and tools of formative assessment were used by teachers when conducting Georgian language and literature lessons.

The observation was conducted on the use of such important strategies and tools of formative assessment as:

1. Observation, quick check and in-depth observation - by recording the results of observations (using short notes and monitoring notebooks and creating portfolios);
2. Student self-assessment and peer assessment;
3. The importance of teacher self-assessment;
4. “Entry” and “Exit” cards;
5. Summary activity;
6. One-minute or three-minute pause;
7. “Traffic light colors”, “Yes-No cards”;
8. “Call sticks”;
9. Assessment criteria and rubrics for group work assessment;
10. Using questions for formative assessment;
11. Constructive feedback (with evaluation, encouragement and advice);
12. Conclusion.
