Abstract

The poetic work of Tariel Kharkhelauri is remarkable both to explore the views of the poet and his distinguished writing style. It is of utmost importance to examine any writer;s language and style for ithout it it is impossible to discuss diverse writing manners and style through which men of letters differ from one another. There are diverse stylistic devices in Tariel Kharkhelauri’s poems. This time we will explore repetition which highlights some aspects characteristic of his poetry. Repetition in his poetry  possesses great aestheticism, emphasis and emotive-expressiveness. More frequently than not, Tariel Kharkhelauri repeats not the separate roots of the words but the whole words and phrases. Identic words of the same meaning are being repeated as well as differet words of the same meaning. Anaphora, one of the kinds of repetition, is one of the significaant figiures of speech which is aimed at enhancing an emotion or an opinion. There are lexical, porphological and syntactical. For example: “ I feel- I cannot do it anymore, / I feel- I will fall down” (ვგრძნობ - ვეღარ შევძლებ,/ ვგრძნობ, დავეცემი);

You are calling me! / And you believe there it is right,/ there is snow, snow, snow/ you are calling me!/”  (მეძახი!/და გჯერა, სწორია,/თოვლია, თოვლია, თოვლია,/მეძახი! / );

“What a great day, a great day- the winds are silent,/ and I too am calm, I too am calm while I used to be stormy/” (რა დიდი დღეა, დიდი დღეა - სდუმან ქარები,/და მეც მშვიდი ვარ, /მეც მშვიდი ვარ ბორგვას ჩვეული…).

In his poems there are many instances of epiphoric repetitions. For example:

Nothing gladdens my heart,/ nothing hurts my heart,/ Laughter of ghosts scares me,/ the sound of water scares me” (არც არაფერი მახარებს, / არც არაფერი მწყინს,/  მზარავს ლანდების ხარხარი, / ხმაური მზარავს წყლის).

There are alos samples of anadiplosis, the kind of repetition when the last word of the preceeding sentence begins the next sentence:

“There emerges a wish of standing in the rain,/ standing as the plain tree is standing by the cliff”. (გაჩნდა სურვილი, წვიმაში ვიდგე, /  ვიდგე, როგორც დგას კლდის პირს ჭადარი...).

Predicates, subjects, part of a compound predicate, objects, attributes, adverbial modifiers and adverbs are also repeated. Furhtermore, stylistic devices like figures of speech, ssynonyms, antonyms, modal words. Thus, through using repetitions the poet strengthens the impression, enhances the integrity of the idea and renders high artistry to the text and creates the style charactersitic of him. Based on the analyzed material we can conclude that it is verbs that are repeated most in Tariel Kharkhelauri’s poetry. However, not less frequently are repeated nouns, conjunctions and particles.
