Lexicography in the Digital Age ("The Georgian Dictionary")

Abstract

"The Georgian Dictionary" is the first Learner’s dictionary of the Georgian language. It was published in 2014 by Bakur Sulakauri Publishing House. The dictionary is intended for everyone interested in learning the Georgian language or deepening and refining their knowledge. With its help, users can both adequately understand the meaning of a given word and use it appropriately in the correct context.

The dictionary covers the active vocabulary of modern standard Georgian, while also taking into account colloquial language. It includes neologisms that have emerged in the language over recent decades as a result of the country’s social, political, economic and cultural changes.

Definitions in the dictionary are presented in a clear and simple language. Lexical items that are less common or less active than the defined word are intentionally avoided in the definitions.

The compilation of the dictionary is based on modern trends in lexicography. In addition to traditional sources, electronic text resources have also been utilized. A special computer program called "Lexicographer" was developed to support the lexicographic work using digital technologies. This software enables the preparation and publication of both printed and electronic dictionaries.
