Background. Coexistence of ESRD and DM may worsen the dermatologic status of patients.
Aim. The aim of our study was to evaluate the characteristic features of pruritus (PR), xerosis (XS), and quality of life (QoL) in diabetic patients with ESRD.
Methods. The study of patients undergoing dialysis were studied. XS and PR were diagnosed by experienced dermatologist. QoL was evaluated among the patients by means of the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Study subjects were divided into 2 groups: group 1 - patients with DM (n=27); and group 2 - patients without DM (n=69).
Results. Hemodialysis duration in DM patients was significantly lower compared to the analogous value of group 2 (p=0.012). DM group was characterized by prevailed percentage of moderate XS (p=0.004); and mild XS were significantly more expressed in group 2 (p=0.004). The patients with moderate and severe PR were significantly more expressed in group 1 (p=0.016). DLQI-scores of patients in groups were not differed significantly.
Conclusion. Uremic XS and PR were significantly expressed in patients with ESRD. The degree of these conditions worsens in the patients with DM.
