ჯანმრთელობის მსოფლიო ორგანიზაცია ტკივილს საზოგადოებრივი ჯანმრთელობის მნიშვნელოვან გლობალურ პრობლემად აღიარებს. ქრონიკული ტკივილი სამედიცინო მომსახურების სპეციფიკურ და სერიოზულ ტვირთს წარმოადგენს და გავრცელების მრავალფეროვნებით გამოირჩევა. მზარდ ლიტერატურულ წყაროებში აქტიურადაა განხილული ბიოლოგიური, ფსიქოლოგიური და სოციალურ-კულტურული ფაქტორების გავლენა ქრონიკული ტკივილის მრავალფეროვან გავრცელებაზე. სტატია მრავალრიცხოვან ონკოლოგიურ პაციენტებზე ჩატარებული კვლევების მეორადი ანალიზის საფუძველზე არკვევს ქრონიკული ტკივილის მაღალ პრევალენს პაციენტთა ასაკის, სქესის, დაავადების სტადიის, ტკივილის ტიპისა და ინტენსიობის მიხედვით; წარმოაჩენს კულტურული ფაქტორების როლს პაციენტების მიერ ტკივილის აღქმა-გამოხატვაში, რაც, თავის მხრივ, ქრონიკული ტკივილის შეფასებასა და მართვაში ჰპოვებს ასახვას. ონკოლოგიური პაციენტების ინფორმირებულობის დაბალი დონე ქრონიკული ტკივილის მიზეზების შესახებ, სხვა ფაქტორებთან ერთად ტკივილის მოლოდინისა და მიღების კულტურულ თავისებურებებს უკავშირდება. ტკივილის შეფასების, მართვის და პრევენციის გეგმები პაციენტის ცხოვრების სოციალური გარემოსა და ქრონიკული ტკივილისადმი კულტურული დამოკიდებულების გათვალისწინებას მოითხოვს.
