Abstract

Creating a scientific basis to improve diabetes prevention and treatment has become increasingly relevant because of the alert incidences of diabetes mellitus. In parallel to the pandemic character of vitamin D deficiency raises the scientific interest in establishing the links between diabetes mellitus and vitamin D. Existing knowledge of the molecular mechanism of vitamin D action and evidence-based results confirm its positive effects on insulin production and secretion, improve insulin sensitivity of target cells, as well as systemic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ability. All of the above said indicates a promising strategy for the treatment or prevention of diabetes, but some issues are debatable and need further research.
