Markers of Georgian National Identity

Abstract

Migration processes have accompanied the formation, development, and existence of humanity, with their origins rooted in ancient history. The ancient "Oikoumene" (inhabited world) and, along with it, the South Caucasus region, were early subjected to cultural and ethnocultural influences, which contributed to the formation of a unique and distinct ethnocultural landscape in the region.  The study and analysis of the emigration-related epistolary heritage preserved in Georgia's archival collections and the Museum of Emigration provide a clear insight into the spiritual value orientations of Georgian emigration. For them, the primary focus is the connection to national culture and its traditions, which, in turn, is a crucial factor in preserving historical memory. Ethnic traditions, together with the native language, serve as the driving forces that shape and define Georgian national identity and the self-awareness of Georgians. A vivid testimony to this is the spiritual heritage of the distinguished representatives of Georgian emigration.
