Abstract

Orhan Pamuk’s novel “Istambul: Memories and the City“ is a profound synthesis of urban identity, collective memory and autobiographical narrative. The author explores the interrelationshipp of the individual, history and environment, where Istanbul appears not only as a place of action, but also as a living, multi-layered and historically contextualized character.

The urban environment of the city directly determines the psychological, social and cultural portraits of the characters. Orhan Pamuk’s description evokes in the reader a simultaneously documentary and deeply emotional image of Istanbul.

The novel skillfully connects the historical, social and aerchitectural details of the city with the author’s personal development – from childhood memories to the formation of the writer’s identity.

The text presents the city as a dynamic organism that stores and creates human experience.
