How does AI influence the process of learning foreign languages, and what challenges do schools and universities face? Proper and ethical approaches are required to ensure high-quality education.
AI and Modern Approaches to Foreign Language Learning
In today’s world, the increasing use of AI in foreign language learning and teaching presents one of the biggest challenges in school and university settings. However, this trend has valid reasons and justifications. What are the benefits of integrating AI into this process?
The first and most important advantage is personalized learning. With the help of AI, it is possible to create individualized learning programs that adapt to a student’s knowledge level and learning pace.
Research suggests that voice assistants such as Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, and Amazon’s Alexa can provide significant support for language learners. Communicating with these assistants in a chosen language helps improve speaking skills, while these platforms use neural networks to analyze and evaluate pronunciation, offering relevant feedback at any time and frequency.
AI also enables the rapid and efficient analysis of a language learner’s progress, which helps instructors and teachers manage the learning process more effectively.
Research Findings and Effectiveness
Studies indicate that AI significantly enhances the quality of education. For instance, research conducted by Duolingo found that users of the app learn the same amount of material in 34 hours as they would in an 11-week traditional language course.
Challenges and Risks
Despite its positive outcomes, AI integration in language learning also presents certain challenges:
Reduced human interaction – Language learning is not only about acquiring technical knowledge but also about developing social communication skills. Therefore, AI should be seen as an assisting tool rather than a replacement for human interaction.
Security and data protection – Ensuring the privacy of students’ personal data is crucial when using AI. Voice assistants and online platforms collect user information, which may pose security risks.
Changing role of teachers – AI should not replace teachers but rather serve as a supportive tool in the educational process.
Conclusion
AI introduces new opportunities for foreign language learning, including personalized education, voice assistants, and automated feedback.
