##article.abstract##

Modernist architecture and urban planning are often viewed merely as a stylistic phenomenon or a form of architectural and spatial organisation derived from technological achievements. Such a definition fails to fully capture the deep-seated factors that shaped the emergence and development of modernist architecture and urban planning.

In this article, the authors argue that modernist as well as anti-modernist ideas were closely linked to and followed the broader shifts in political-economic realities of their times. To support this argument, they trace the genesis of anti-modernist ideas in post-war[1] European urban planning and architecture through an ample selection of projects from various periods.

[1] For the purpose of this article, the term ‘post-war’ denotes the post-Second World War period.
