Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment with braces plays a crucial role in improving oral health, function, and facial aesthetics. However, successful treatment outcomes depend not only on clinical interventions but also on patients’ awareness, understanding, and active participation in the treatment process. Insufficient knowledge regarding orthodontic appliances may lead to poor compliance, inadequate oral hygiene, increased complications, and dissatisfaction with treatment outcomes.

Aim:The aim of this study was to assess the level of public awareness regarding the use of orthodontic braces among the population of Georgia, using the city of Tbilisi as a representative example.

Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending dental clinics in Tbilisi. A total of 360 participants were surveyed using a structured, self-administered questionnaire developed by the researchers based on international experience. The questionnaire assessed demographic characteristics, sources of information about orthodontic treatment, awareness of brace-related procedures, possible complications, and the impact of braces on daily life and oral health. Awareness levels were evaluated using a scoring system, where correct answers were assigned one point. Descriptive statistics, chi-square (c²) tests, and correlation analyses were performed to evaluate associations between awareness levels and demographic variables.

Results:The overall level of awareness regarding the use of orthodontic braces was found to be insufficient among the surveyed population. Respondents with inadequate awareness (scores below 50%) were significantly more prevalent among female participants compared to males (c² = 38.367, p < 0.0001). A significant positive correlation was observed between age and awareness scores (r = 0.416, p < 0.0001), while a strong negative correlation was identified between awareness levels and the frequency of reported treatment-related complications (r = -0.815, p < 0.001). Although most participants reported receiving information from their orthodontists, a considerable proportion indicated that they were not adequately informed about potential discomforts, complications, or the purpose of follow-up procedures.

Conclusion:The findings demonstrate that public awareness regarding orthodontic brace use in Georgia remains insufficient. Despite the availability of orthodontic services, patient education and communication appear inadequate. Strengthening patient-centered communication, enhancing the role of dental professionals in education, and integrating public health strategies are essential to improve awareness, treatment compliance, and overall orthodontic outcomes.
