Abstract

Trinity Church is located in the village of Sameba, Khelvachauri Municipality, east
of Batumi, on one of the most distinguished mountains. 333 meters above sea level. Nowadays
you can get there on an asphalt road which passes through the village of Salibauri.
In 1874, Dimitri Bakradze traveled to Ajara-Guria. He gave the only reference about the
Trinity Church.
After Ajara returned to the motherland, at the beginning of the twentieth century, Russia
began to pursue its strategic military interests in the waters of Batumi.
Undoubtedly, when the Russians came to Trinity, here they found the ruins of an old
Georgian church and therefore, next to a military unit, decided to build a military orthodox
church. It was built directly on the ruins of an older one.
In 2001 it was decided to conduct an archaeological study of this place. After the
research work, it was established that the Georgian single-nave Orthodox Church functioned here
in the XIV_XVI centuries, which was destroyed after the Turkish invasion. After the completion
of the works, the Georgian Patriarchate built a new church on this site.
