From the history of Russian-Israeli relations

Abstract

         In recent years, Israel has been in the spotlight of the world community. For a year and a half, the country has been fighting radical organizations, Hamas and Hezbollah, and the threat of escalation of the Iran-Israel conflict still exists. Despite the fact that peace in the Middle East has not been achieved and Israel's goals have not been fully realized, relations between Russia and Israel are characterized as complex and multifaceted, combining elements of cooperation and contradictions. Historically, relations between the countries began with the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1948, but were interrupted in 1967 and restored in 1991 after the collapse of the USSR. Currently, the two countries maintain an active political dialogue, although there are also disagreements, in particular, over the situation in Syria and Israel's position on Ukraine.

                  In international relations, Russian-Israeli relations have always had their geopolitical significance. Much depended on these relations in the Middle East. It is noteworthy that even today, in the context of the ongoing geopolitical shifts in the Middle East, the relations between these two states are very important.

                After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia, as its legal successor, not only maintained, but also further strengthened relations with Israel. Today, Russia and Israel cooperate in such areas as trade-economic, political and military-technical relations; the countries also cooperate in resolving international issues. In economic relations, Israel is Russia's main partner in the Middle East. The UN project "Gazprom" is being implemented in the field of natural gas supplies. Inter-parliamentary relations are noticeable within the framework of political relations, as well as a joint fight against crime and corruption. In terms of military-technical relations, it is planned to create a joint Russian-Israeli enterprise to create favorable armaments. When resolving issues of international importance, the convergence of interests between countries takes place in the context of strategic partnership. However, there are a number of problems in Russian-Israeli relations: in particular, Israel's dissatisfaction with Russia's cooperation with Iran in the field of nuclear weapons; divergent approaches to resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, double standards in the approach to the elimination of terrorist organizations. Based on this, some tension is observed in the geopolitical sphere.
