For establishing the Georgian numerical name as a part of speech in the grammars of the XVIII-XIX centuries

Abstract

There are not so few words in the Georgian language, the meaning of which is related to the concept of number, quantity. Along with the meaning, they are distinguished by grammatical features. The properties that are characteristic of numerical nouns allow them to be separated as a separate part of speech.

Research shows that this process has been going on for centuries. The work clearly shows the place of the numerical name in the grammars of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century. The specifics of numerical names are reviewed in the textbooks of Zurab Shanshovani, Anton Perechi, Gayoz Rector, Ioane Batonishvili and Solomon Dodashvili.

Each author's views on numerical names are analyzed. A certain opinion is expressed that Dodashvili's "Georgian Grammar", which was printed in 1830, is mainly based on Kartvelishvili's grammar, but the author has presented many things in an original way, including the semantic characterization of numerical names.

Dodashvili's and Batonishvili's views on the numerical name are compared with the thinking of the predecessor grammarians and it is justified that the authors could not fully outline the lexical-semantic and morphological-syntactic features of the numerical name, that is why the numerical name is not separated as an independent part of speech in the above-mentioned grammars. It has been revealed that the term "numerical name" belongs to Anton the First.
